More than 1,000 Harvard undergraduates have signed a petition urging the university to reach a fair contract with its dining hall workers, according to the Student Labor Action Movement, The Harvard Crimson reported.

The workers, represented by UNITE HERE Local 26, have been without a contract since June 19. Negotiations began in March. The student group said workers are seeking fair wages, health insurance and job security.

At a May rally, Local 26 President Carlos R. Aramayo said a cook at Harvard earns about $31 an hour, while a cook at MIT earns between $35 and nearly $37, according to The Crimson.
