Down 13-3 in the Rain With Three Receivers and Hunter Henry Out, Drake Maye Went 9-for-10 After Halftime. The Patriots Are 5-3

New England scored 21 straight points to beat Miami 24-19. Maye became the first Patriots quarterback since Tom Brady in 2007 with three or more touchdowns in five straight games.

At halftime in Miami on Sunday, the Patriots trailed a one-win Dolphins team 13-3, in steady rain, without A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Mack Hollins, TreVeyon Henderson, Alijah Vera-Tucker or Mike Onwenu. By the end of the third quarter they led. They won 24-19 and moved to 5-3, and 3-0 in the AFC East, according to the team.

I went through the numbers from Patriots.com's game analysis, the Dolphins' recap and ESPN's box score. The story is two different halves from the same quarterback.

Drake Maye finished 16-of-20 for 199 yards with two touchdown passes and a 2-yard touchdown run. In the second half alone, he completed 9 of 10 passes for 146 yards and three total touchdowns, a perfect 158.3 passer rating, Patriots.com's Evan Lazar wrote. His average air yards per attempt went from 4.6 in the first half to 9.7 in the second.

He also became the first Patriots quarterback with three or more touchdowns in five straight games since Tom Brady in 2007, according to Patriots.com.

"Just to keep our composure and chip away at it little by little," coach Mike Vrabel said of his halftime message. "It was a good opportunity for us not to be frontrunners."

The swing play was a 43-yard touchdown to Kyle Williams in the third quarter on a go-post-go concept, with DeMario Douglas motioning to set up Williams one-on-one with safety Michael Taaffe on the deep post, according to Lazar's breakdown. "When we called it, I knew it was going to be a touchdown," Williams said. "It's just something we've been trying to get off the call sheet for weeks and weeks."

Miami's next drive stalled after a taunting penalty on running back Ollie Gordon. New England then went 13 plays for Maye's 2-yard keeper on a speed option, where he showed linebacker Willie Gay Jr. the pitch to Rhamondre Stevenson and walked in. Douglas added a 48-yard touchdown off a fake toss-boot, stopping on a deep curl, shaking cornerback JuJu Brents and running away. Douglas led the team with three catches for 76 yards.

Miami quarterback Malik Willis went 21-of-32 for 211 yards and two touchdowns, and the Dolphins' late 35-yard touchdown to Kevin Coleman Jr. made it a five-point game, according to the Dolphins' recap.

The line fix nobody will talk about

Here's the detail I keep coming back to. Maye was under pressure on 57.1 percent of his first-half dropbacks and was sacked twice, both on stunts, per Next Gen Stats figures cited by Patriots.com. At halftime, the Patriots put Ben Brown in at left guard for Walter Rouse. Second-half pressure rate: 38.5 percent. That's not one guy fixing everything, but the numbers moved the moment the lineup did.

The run defense held Gordon to 69 yards on 19 carries and stuffed him five times. Cory Durden had 1.5 sacks and two run stuffs, and the Patriots sacked Willis five times. The weak spot was zone coverage again: Willis went 8-of-10 for 93 yards against zone in the first half. When defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr called more man in the third quarter, Willis was 6-of-9 for 36 yards against it, Patriots.com reported. Kevin Byard III got his first interception as a Patriot on a ricochet.

Tight end Hunter Henry left with a foot injury. Andy Borregales missed a 40-yard field goal, and Miami's Jaylen Wright had kickoff returns of 43 and 36 yards. Efton Chism III fumbled in the first half, leading to a Miami field goal, then finished with five catches for 37 yards.

The Packers come to Gillette on Sunday, the weekend Rob Gronkowski goes into the Patriots Hall of Fame; the induction ceremony is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, according to the team. The injury report this week matters more than the opponent. The Patriots won a division road game with their fourth and fifth receivers playing major snaps. Chism played 52 snaps, Williams 49 and Douglas 38. If Brown and Doubs come back, this offense gets a lot more room. If they don't, Maye just showed he can carry it for a half. The question is whether he can do it for four quarters.
