The criminal trial of Russell Brand, the British comedian, actor and former husband of singer Katy Perry, has moved through its second week at Southwark Crown Court in London, with jurors hearing accounts from six women who accuse him of sexual offences.

Brand, 51, is charged with three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault, involving six women over a 10-year period from 1999 to 2009, according to ABC News in Australia, the BBC and Reuters. He has pleaded not guilty to all seven charges. In police interviews, he denied ever engaging in non-consensual sexual activity, the Associated Press reported, and he has said any sexual contact, if it happened, would have been consensual, according to the BBC.

None of the allegations has been proven. The jury will decide whether the prosecution has established guilt. Under UK law, the complainants are granted lifelong anonymity, ABC News reported, and Boston Uncut does not identify them.

Brand, who is on bail, has appeared in court with his wife, Laura Gallacher, throughout the trial, the AP reported. The AP said he listened intently from the dock and sat expressionless for much of the time as the women described their encounters with him.

The allegations heard so far span several settings, according to news reports from the courtroom. A summary by ABC7 New York, drawing on AP reporting, said jurors heard about an alleged 2004 incident at a bar, an alleged 2001 encounter at MTV offices and an allegation connected to the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the fourth complainant told the jury that Brand sexually assaulted her in the mid-2000s at Choice FM, the London radio station where she worked, ABC News reported. She testified that Brand grabbed her face, kissed her and touched her without consent while members of his entourage stood nearby and did nothing, according to ABC News. She said she reported the alleged incident to police in 2023 after seeing allegations about Brand in a documentary and a newspaper article.

Under cross-examination, Brand's barrister, Ian Winter KC, asked why she had not come forward at the time, ABC News reported. She said there was a "toxic" culture at her workplace, that she feared no one would believe her and that she worried about losing her job.

The BBC reported that another complainant testified that Brand assaulted her and then pulled her into a toilet and raped her, after a conversation about his hosting of the Channel 4 show Big Brother's Big Mouth. Winter suggested in cross-examination that the two went to the toilet consensually and abandoned any sexual encounter, the BBC reported. The woman rejected that version of events.

Jurors also heard police interview video from a sixth complainant, who said she met Brand after one of his shows at the Hammersmith Apollo and was later invited to his home, according to ABC News. She told a detective that an encounter that began consensually turned into an act she did not consent to, and that he did not stop when she asked him to, ABC News reported. Reuters reported that the woman told police in the interview played to the court on Tuesday that Brand raped her at his house.

On Thursday, Oct. 22, two friends of that complainant gave evidence, the BBC reported. One said the woman had told her soon afterward that the encounter had hurt and that she had told Brand to stop "lots of times," according to the BBC. The woman's former boyfriend told the court that she characterised the encounter as rape when she spoke about it, the BBC reported. Statements from her parents were also read to the jury, according to the BBC.

Brand's defense has challenged the women's accounts throughout cross-examination. According to the AP, Winter is expected to argue that sexual encounters from Brand's past have been "reimagined" when he outlines the defense case. It is not clear whether Brand himself will testify, the AP reported.

The fourth complainant told the jury she contacted police in 2023 after seeing allegations about Brand in a documentary and a newspaper article, ABC News reported. The defense has not disputed in court reporting reviewed by Boston Uncut that the allegations became public that year; it disputes that the alleged offences occurred.

Brand rose to prominence in Britain in the mid-2000s, when, as the fourth complainant described it to the jury, he was "an A-list celebrity" hosting a popular spin-off of the reality show Big Brother, ABC News reported. He was later married to the American singer Katy Perry, Reuters noted.

The trial is expected to last up to 10 weeks, according to the AP; earlier estimates cited by the BBC and ABC News put it at about six weeks. Boston Uncut will update coverage as the defense presents its case and the jury deliberates.
