Win Sunday and It's Done: The Math on the Revs' Fight With Miami for the No. 2 Seed
New England leads Inter Miami by two points with two games left, and MLS's first tiebreaker is total wins, where the Revs are up 18 to 15. Here is every way Sunday's Gillette finale can go, and what the No. 2 seed is actually worth.

The Revolution did the hard part Wednesday night. The 3-2 win over Red Bull New York was their fourth straight and 18th of the season, and the club says it guarantees a top-three finish in the Eastern Conference and home-field advantage in the first round. Now comes Sunday, 7 p.m. at Gillette, against Inter Miami, which the club itself is billing as a battle for second place. So I did the math with the league's rulebook open.
Where things stand, per MLS's standings after Wednesday's games: Nashville 71 points, New England 58, Inter Miami 56, Chicago 52, Charlotte 50, Philadelphia 47, then Orlando City and FC Cincinnati tied on 43. New England and Miami each have two games left. The Revs are 18-10-4. Miami has 15 wins.
First, the top is gone. Nashville at 71 cannot be caught; the most the Revs can reach is 64. So the fight is for No. 2, and the Revs are not falling below No. 3 either way. Chicago can get to 58 at most, and even then the Revs would hold the tiebreaker on wins.
That tiebreaker matters. Under MLS's 2026 competition guidelines, teams level on points are separated first by total number of wins, then goal differential, then goals scored, then head-to-head among conference opponents. The Revs have 18 wins to Miami's 15, which means almost every tie on points goes New England's way.
Now the scenarios, Revs perspective, with two games each left (Sunday head-to-head, then Decision Day on Nov. 7, when the Revs visit Orlando and Miami hosts Charlotte, per the league schedule):
Revs win Sunday: New England goes to 61 points. Miami's ceiling becomes 59. The No. 2 seed is clinched, done, with a week to spare.
Draw Sunday: Revs 59, Miami 57. On Nov. 7, a Revs win or draw in Orlando clinches No. 2, because even if Miami beats Charlotte to reach 60, a Revs draw also gets them to 60 and they own the wins tiebreaker. The only way Miami jumps them is a Revs loss in Orlando plus a Miami win.
Revs lose Sunday: Miami 59, Revs 58, and Miami leads. Then the Revs need help or a win. A Revs win at Orlando gets to 61, which beats a Miami draw or loss but not a Miami win (62). A Revs draw gets to 59, which only holds up if Miami loses to Charlotte; then it's 59-59 and New England wins the tiebreaker on wins. A Revs loss in Orlando and the No. 2 seed belongs to Miami.
So what is No. 2 worth? Under the league's 2026 playoff format, seeds 1 through 7 go straight into a best-of-three first round, and 8 and 9 play a single wild-card game for the right to face No. 1. In Round One, No. 2 plays No. 7 and No. 3 plays No. 6, with the higher seed hosting Games 1 and 3. Then the winner of 2-versus-7 meets the winner of 3-versus-6 in the conference semifinals, hosted by the higher seed. Finishing second instead of third means drawing the seventh seed instead of the sixth in Round One, and if the Revs advance as the No. 2 seed, they would host the 3-versus-6 winner in the semifinal.
There is a funny wrinkle in that. As of Wednesday the seventh spot was Orlando City, level on 43 points with Cincinnati, and Orlando is the team the Revs play on Decision Day. It is entirely possible New England plays Orlando on Nov. 7 and then again in a best-of-three a couple of weeks later. Wild-card games are Nov. 18 and Round One runs Nov. 20 to Dec. 2, per MLS.
The form is on New England's side. Dor Turgeman has five goals in his last four games and 10 since the World Cup break. Carles Gil became the eighth player in MLS history with 100 regular-season assists Wednesday and leads the league with 91 key passes. Matt Turner's 18 wins are a Revolution single-season record for a goalkeeper. And the Revs have 11 home wins, one shy of the club record, which they can tie Sunday, according to the club's match notes.
Miami, for what it's worth, has been leaking. It drew 2-2 with Cincinnati on Wednesday and lost 2-0 at Red Bull on Oct. 24, per the league results, and it has allowed 55 goals, 11 more than the Revs' 44, even while scoring a conference-best 75.
Dez's take: The Revs have spent all season winning late, eight game-winners after the 75th minute, and blowing a two-goal lead to a Red Bull team sitting 10th in the East is the kind of thing that ought to scare them straight before Sunday. The good news is the wins tiebreaker makes this simple. Don't lose at home to Miami and you control your own fate. Win and you can rest people in Orlando.
What we still don't know: who the Revs' Round One opponent will be, which won't be settled until the 4 p.m. Eastern Conference games on Decision Day.
