JAY-Z and J. Cole Wrote Letters for Lil Durk. Prosecutors Called It a 'Familiar Playbook' and Want Him Kept in Jail

Lil Durk's camp brought out the heavy hitters. The feds weren't impressed.

In a filing obtained by XXL on Wednesday, federal prosecutors objected to the Chicago rapper's latest request for release on bond before his second trial. They noted he has already been denied bond four times, XXL reported.

The letters

Durk submitted support letters from JAY-Z, J. Cole and other celebrities. Prosecutors said those letters shouldn't move the court. "Defendant has trotted out several celebrities in his support," the filing reads, according to XXL, which also references what prosecutors called paid protesters outside the courthouse during his earlier trial. "This familiar playbook to apply public pressure to these proceedings, in search of preferential treatment, should be rejected out of hand."

The jail allegations

Prosecutors also claim Durk has violated Bureau of Prisons rules by making unauthorized calls and getting contraband into jail. XXL reported that he was recently placed in solitary after talking back to staff and questioning repeated searches of his cell. Those are the government's allegations; Durk's response to them was not included in the report.

Where the case stands

Durk was found not guilty of murder-for-hire in September. He still faces a second trial on VICAR, violent crimes in aid of racketeering, charges tied to his Only The Family crew, set for Aug. 30, 2027. A bond review hearing was scheduled Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Dez's take

In my read, the celebrity-letter move was always a gamble. Letters from Hov and Cole say Durk's got friends in high places. Prosecutors just flipped that into an argument that he's trying to pressure the court. And the jail-conduct claims hurt more than any letter helps. A jury already cleared him once. Is the government stretching to keep a man locked up 21 months before trial, or is it a real flight risk? That's what the judge has to answer.

Additional reporting

The feds have rejected Lil Durk's celebrity support letters and say they are not get-out-of-jail-free cards. In documents obtained by XXL on Wednesday (Nov. 4), federal prosecutors submitted a letter of objection regarding the Chicago rapper's request for release on bond before his second trial, which is scheduled for next August. Prosecutors noted that Durk had already been refused bond on four prior occasions, and argued that his proposed bond package fails to address concerns over flight risk and public safety.

Additionally, the feds claim Durk has continued to violate Bureau of Prisons rules by making unauthorized calls and sneaking contraband into jail. Recently, it was reported that Durk was placed in solitary confinement after talking back to jail staff and questioning their constant shakedown of his cell.

As for the celebrity endorsement letters, prosecutors insist the missives by JAŸ-Z, J. Cole and other celebs should not influence the court's decision on granting Durk bond. Lil Durk has a bond review hearing scheduled for today in Los Angeles. The Grammy-winning rapper was found not guilty of murder-for-hire in September. He is facing a second trial on VICAR (Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering) charges in connection to his rap crew, Only The Family (OTF), on Aug. 30, 2027.
