250,000 Visitors or 47,500? Cambridge Can't Agree How Many People Walked Into a Newsstand
The council cited a number five times higher than the operator's own count, and the sponsor couldn't say where it came from.

Cambridge voted 8-0 to rebid the Harvard Square KiOSK. Fine. Contracts end, cities rebid.
But the amendment praising the current programming cited city-commissioned data: more than 250,000 visitors since May 2025. Councillor Patty Nolan asked how that was counted. The sponsor said he didn't know.
The KiOSK's own manager told Cambridge Day in October it was 47,500. So the operator's number is lower than the city's. That doesn't happen often.
If you're going to decide the future of a public building, maybe settle the headcount first.
What we still don't know: who produced the 250,000 figure and how.
And that's the part that sticks with me: the official story and the lived story are running on two different clocks. Sources below if you want the straight news version without my side-eye.
What we still don't know: whether anyone with a title will treat the gap as a problem to fix — or just another footnote after the news cycle moves on.
