If Charlestown High Closes, Families Deserve to Know What Moves In

Wu wants to close two high schools and an early ed center in 2028. The building's next school still has no name.

Mayor Wu's administration proposed closing Charlestown High, Greater Egleston High in Roxbury and the East Boston Early Education Center in June 2028, The Boston Globe reported. The School Committee hears it Wednesday.

The numbers are real. Charlestown High has room for 1,000 kids and 559 enrolled. BPS lost 3,000 students in two years. Wu said the money should go to students, not 'half empty buildings.'

But here's what bugs me. Wu said a different high school will move into the Charlestown building by fall 2028, and the report didn't say which one. Superintendent Skipper said nearly 80 percent of the school's students don't live in Charlestown. Those kids and families are going to want to know where they're going.

My opinion: close what you have to close. But name the plan before the vote, not after.
