Boston police recorded 339 incident reports flagged as shootings from January through September 2026, down from 426 during the same months of 2025, according to department data. The decrease of 87 reports amounts to about 20%.

The 2026 figure is the lowest for that nine-month period in the four years covered by the current dataset. The comparable totals were 462 in 2023, 374 in 2024 and 426 in 2025.

The reports remain concentrated in a few police districts. District B3, which covers Mattapan, recorded 101 shooting-flagged reports so far in 2026, the most of any district. District B2, which covers Roxbury, recorded 88, and District C11, which covers Dorchester, recorded 53. District E18 (Hyde Park) recorded 21, District E13 (Jamaica Plain) recorded 20, and District A1 (downtown) recorded 10.

The figures count incident reports in which the department marked a shooting. A single shooting can generate more than one report, and the data does not count the number of people shot. Because the same measure is used each year, however, the figures allow a consistent year-over-year comparison.

How we reported this

Boston Uncut analyzed the Boston Police Department's Crime Incident Reports (2023 to present) dataset on Analyze Boston, last updated Oct. 19, 2026. Records with the shooting field set to 1 were counted by year for January through September, and by police district for 2026. District names follow the department's district map. The figures count reports, not victims.
