A majority of voters in Alberta chose to remain part of Canada in a nonbinding referendum Monday, CBC News projected, according to Anadolu Agency. With 1,480 of 5,587 polling stations reporting, preliminary figures showed 76.2%, or 826,918 voters, in favor of remaining in Canada and 23.8%, or 257,726, in favor of beginning the separation process.

The question asked whether Alberta should remain a province or whether the provincial government should begin the legal process to hold a binding referendum on separation. About 1.36 million residents voted through advance and special voting, according to Elections Alberta, as cited by Anadolu.
